what's freemasonry all about?

At Ridings Tablers’ Lodge we can’t resist an opportunity to talk about Freemasonry and why we enjoy it so much! Freemasonry means different things to each Mason; making new friends, contributing to society, celebrating a long tradition, experiencing personal growth, taking up a unique hobby, having fun… You don’t need to be invited, and you don’t need to be wealthy or a professional. Take a look at the video below from United Grand Lodge which explains what it’s all about.

reasons why people become freemasons:

one - principles

“FREEMASONRY DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE ON GROUNDS OF RACE, COLOUR, RELIGION, POLITICAL VIEWS OR SOCIAL STANDING”

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. For many, it’s biggest draw is the fact that members come from all walks of life and meet as equals whatever their race, religion or socio-economics position in society. Its values are based on integrity, kindness, honesty, fairness and tolerance.

two - friendship

“I WANTED TO BECOME A FREEMASON TO MEET A CROSS-SECTION OF PEOPLE, MAKE LONG LASTING FRIENDSHIPS AND HAVE FUN!”

Freemasonry provides a unique environment for people from all backgrounds to learn skills, make true friendships, achieve their potential and, above all, have fun. What is more, the organisation provides a valuable form for discussion between members in an open environment, helping to build confidence and trust.

three - giving

“I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO MY COMMUNITY – WE DO NOT UNDERTAKE EXTERNAL FUNDRAISING, ALL MONEY COMES FROM OUR OWN EFFORTS”

Freemasons make a major contribution to society through their own charities, as well as through donations to UK charities and worldwide disaster relief funds, with members playing an active role in their communities.

Established in 1980, The Freemasons' Grand Charity has donated over £100 million to a range of charitable causes. We support national charities, local projects dear to individual Lodges' hearts and we give aid to those affected by natural disasters around the world.
Still to this day, the roots of modern Freemasonry are the subject of intense speculation, but the general consensus among Masonic scholars is that they lie with the medieval stonemasons that built our castles and cathedrals.

FOUR - HISTORY

“THERE ARE SEVERAL THEORIES ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF FREEMASONRY, RANGING FROM ANCIENT BUILDERS TO MEDIEVAL STONEMASONS – I LOVE DELVING INTO THAT”

Through our ceremonies and learned rituals, you can learn how that history has developed Freemasons over hundreds of years, learning symbols, meanings and what lies at the heart of our moral teachings. Many of our members join with a love of history and heritage, and leave with so much more.

FIVE - GROWTH

“FREEMASONRY HAS HELPED BUILD MY CONFIDENCE, ENABLING ME TO TACKLE CHALLENGES I USED TO SHY AWAY FROM”

Every Freemason embarks on his own journey of self-discovery when he enters the organisation. With three levels of Freemasonry, the progression through to senior roles within a Lodge can be seen in much the same way as a person progressing in his career – each promotion bringing greater understanding and responsibility.

Whether you want to meet up at a local Lodge to find a quiet haven from the rest of the world or push yourself to your limits. Freemasonry has a breadth that will appeal to anyone who wants to broaden his horizons. It is up to the individual to make his own journey and find his own understanding.
